If Congress does not reach a deal, SNAP funding will be cut starting Saturday, which could leave over 40 million Americans without help to buy food.
In Ohio, counties near the Kentucky border report between 20 and 26 percent of households use SNAP while central counties average under 20 percent.
Fairfield County will pause SNAP benefits in November due to a government shutdown, affecting about 7,500 households that normally receive roughly $190 monthly—county officials said benefits will resume once federal funds are restored.
Local food banks are preparing to help those in need if the shutdown continues.
