ECONOMY NEWS

  • A sharp drop in U.S. soybean sales to China is threatening Ohio farmers and supply chain workers as China shifts to South American sources. Governor DeWine and experts warn that local jobs in trucking and ports will suffer if the issue is not resolved soon—risking a tough harvest season.  ABC6
  • State gas prices reached $2.84 per gallon on Monday, down from $2.99 last week according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration — they are roughly 10.4% lower than the national average and have fallen 24 cents since last month.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spotted lanternflies will lay egg masses this fall that will hatch in spring, so Ohio officials advise residents to scrape the eggs into soapy water or rubbing alcohol to slow their spread—protecting local crops and gardens.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
  • Spotted lanternflies have returned to central Ohio and are spreading quickly. The Ohio Department of Agriculture says the insects threaten local agriculture and ecosystems —18 counties, including Franklin— are under quarantine, so residents should report sightings and inspect vehicles before leaving affected areas.  NBC4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, MORPC held a discussion on the future of passenger rail in central Ohio to connect cities like Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Cincinnati—officials said a service development plan will determine routes, station design, and train speeds. They added that federal funding and private partnerships will be needed to move the project forward.  NBC4

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bloom-Carroll volleyball team is 14-0 and plays at an elite level despite losing five key seniors last season—senior Sienna Hogue and her teammates have stepped up to keep the team strong in the face of change. Coach Kyle McFerin celebrated his 100th win on Sept. 13 and praised the close bond and consistent play that have driven the team's success this season.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
