Good morning, Lancaster. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of July.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fairfield County Emergency Management Agency director Jon Kochis warned that flash flooding near the Hocking River could be devastating if heavy rains occur and urged residents along the river in Sugar Grove (especially those on Tarkiln Road) to prepare for emergencies. He recommended signing up for Alert Fairfield and NOAA Weather Radio notifications to receive timely updates.  NBC4
  • The Ohio Department of Natural Resources completed its 2025 bald eagle nest census, counting 964 active nests in 87 counties as the species rebounds from past lows (only Meigs County lacks a confirmed nest due to a nearby nest in West Virginia). The census used aerial surveys and over 1,800 resident reports to show a steady increase from 707 nests in 2020 and 841 in 2024.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Budget cuts have left over 30 leadership roles vacant at National Weather Service offices in Wilmington and Cleveland that cover Central Ohio — emergency managers worry that these vacancies may hinder timely weather alerts and forecasts. The agency will soon begin hiring over 100 employees nationwide to fill critical positions.  ABC6
