Big Lots reopened eight stores in Ohio on May 15 while other retailers are buying former locations; Aldi recently acquired sites in Louisiana, Michigan and Texas—though it will open several new stores in Ohio this year.

Fairfield Union Junior High’s Power of the Pen team won the Sweepstakes Trophy at the Ohio University-Lancaster Regional Tournament and will compete in the state tournament on May 22 — eight students advanced, including Layla Paxton who earned Round 3 Best of Rounds.

Ohio University Lancaster hosted STEM Discovery Day on May 9, welcoming over 350 students from 21 local schools, 36 teachers and 30 science professionals to explore hands-on STEM activities.

Fairfield County Sheriff Alex Lape is recruiting deputies and corrections officers with starting pays of $109,450 and $87,500 respectively—he lowered the minimum age to 18 and held events at local high schools and Hocking College.

About 250 people applied and six have been hired so far, and background checks take four to six weeks.
