- ➤ Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 5 and now plans to sell or close all its stores—leaving only four open in Ohio compared to 142 in June 2024. - ➤ Dandelions have arrived in Ohio and are now common in lawns as many residents see these bright yellow plants that bloom from April to as late as June. - ➤ Officials report that the New World Screwworm, a parasite that lays eggs in wounds and whose larvae can cause serious infections, is not present in Ohio today (according to APHIS). Experts warn that warmer temperatures and rising cases in Mexico may increase future risks for livestock, pets, and even humans. Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
- ➤ The FDA warned on May 8th that tianeptine—called gas station heroin—poses serious health risks like agitation, coma, and death and is still sold at convenience stores, gas stations, vape shops, and online despite its ban in Ohio and nine other states. The agency sent warning letters to companies selling the drug and advised health professionals to urge patients to avoid its use. ABC6
- ➤ The Fairfield County Health Department is inviting residents to answer a short survey that asks about local health concerns and ideas for improvement—responses are confidential and will help shape new public health plans.
