BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rockside Winery and Vineyards co-owner Valerie Coolidge spoke today about the winery's operations in Lancaster, stressing how the business supports local community traditions. Her discussion offered insight into managing a successful local winemaking operation.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
  • McDonald's is removing self-serve soda fountains nationwide as part of a modernization plan; customers in Lancaster can still ask for free refills today (new crafted sodas debut May 6) with all fountains set to be gone by 2032.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fisher Catholic High School’s quiz bowl team competed from April 24-26 at the Small School National Championship Tournament at Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago and finished preliminary rounds with a 3-7 record under coaches Michael Sedlack and Lynn Stevenson.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
  • Teachers across Ohio can enjoy free meals and discount offers during Teacher Appreciation Week running May 4-8. Participating restaurants require teachers to show a valid school ID to claim the deals (Chipotle offers free meals, among others).  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Taxation announced a back-to-school tax holiday from midnight on Friday, Aug. 7 through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9 that will let shoppers skip sales tax on clothing under $75 + school supplies and instructional materials under $20 while excluding restaurant meals.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fairfield Medical Center explained that a mini stroke (TIA) is a warning sign that a full stroke may occur and urged callers to dial 911 for symptoms like numbness, slurred speech, or vision loss. Doctors recommended scans and tests to address risks such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette

  • Fairfield Union baseball clinched its first league championship in 24 years with a 4-0 win over Liberty Union on May 1 (after an 0-2 start) (the team will secure the title outright on May 6 at Amanda-Clearcreek).  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
